Educators understand and apply knowledge of student growth and development.

This standard has been met within my grade 1 and 2 class through differentiation of handouts. Students who demonstrate strengths within writing were provided opportunities to challenge these skills through handouts that required expanded sentences and justifications. Students who were still developing their writing abilities were provided handouts with an area to write, but to expand on those ideas through drawings and pictures. This demonstrates my awareness of student development.

Another way that I have met this professional standard is through a good day chart used for one of my students. This good day chart acknowledges the growth in the particular behavioural area that the student and I are working on. For this student, this was focused upon using best listening practices and keeping a positive attitude. This good day chart had a reward system attached to it that proved successful! The student would receive a special sticker for each full day that he met this goal, and the more he worked at it, the more successful I watched the chart become. In a matter of weeks, this student was able to develop their interpersonal skills when working in groups, and become an engaged listener that demonstrates full-body listening.

I have attached an exemplar of this good day chart below. The name of the student has been censored.
